First day of summer camp! This is always a crazy day, so many new faces and feelings, the air was bustling with excitement and curiosity. I am working with six year olds and I could see it in their eyes from the moment they came in how happy they are to be at Jusoor. And I am here to give them my all. We started off with names and created name tag necklaces. The language barrier is definitely a challenge but I am blessed with a class that is so attentive even when they have no idea what I am saying. I know I am here to teach them but I know they are going to teach me so much as well. And they are really trying to speak English as well which illuminates their desire to connect.
After a week of connecting with my fellow volunteers, it was inspiring to see everyone arrive full of wonder, looking forward to seeing what the day would bring. Like a child with a backpack full of new school supplies, the volunteers had minds ripe and ready full of ideas to make this experience as positive as possible for the children. As soon as we got off the bus, the kids ran to the fence to see who these mysterious, (mostly) foreign volunteers would be. I am so grateful to be in a place full of so much love and wonder. Jusoor is really incredible, I can’t wait to see what this journey brings.
