Day 9: Friday, 24 July, 2019
Jad Zeitouni, Lebanon & United States
This kids today were engaged and excited. It has been a week, and the students really have become a team. Kids help one another and encourage each other. It’s admirable the respect that they have for me, their classmates, and themselves. Today we began with an art exercise that’s goal was to draw what animal they would choose to be and why. I got animals ranging from rabbits to fictitious dragons. One pattern I noticed was that a large portion of the students chose a bird or butterfly. They all highlighted, in one way or another, the freedom that flying gives. We then worked on the story telling project. Finally, we worked on math. The students here love math more than any other subject. During the math exercise, one student made another cry for getting a problem wrong. I spoke to them outside and got them to reconcile. Whenever we came back inside, the students were taking turns singing songs. Later on, I was surprised to see these two students sang multiple duets together. They went back to being friends almost immediately. Actions like these show that kindness is exemplified in this class.
Jad is volunteering at Jusoor’s educational centers in Lebanon during July and August 2019 as part of the Summer Volunteer Program. You can read more posts by our volunteers here.
