Today, the students in classroom number 1 got to know the importance of the presence of fruits, vegetables and nuts in their daily meals in a way to maintain a good health as they are rich in vitamins, fibers and minerals. In a way to build up their vocabulary in English language, I provided them with long lists containing names of examples from the 3 families with their translations into Arabic to ensure that they caught them. For instance, they knew that grape means عنب, artichoke means أرضي شوكي and pistachio means فستق. To ensure that the whole class acquired today’s knowledge, I tested them individually and orally. To strengthen team – work strategy and empathy among them, I asked some students to help their peers on memorizing them. At the end of the day, they tasted some fig. The most rigorous and tiring challenge that I encounter with the students is the language barrier, that is why as being a native Arabic speaker and an English literature major, I do my best to translate almost every word so that they’ll be able to catch the important ideas. In terms of their behavior, the students are friendly and on the contrary of my expectations, they are well disciplined. I believe, for a better benefit from summer programs, inserting pure English lessons – to prepare them on listening, speaking, reading and writing – in the program would be a good idea. Overall, the students are gaining plenty of academic and life skills on top of them are ethical ones.
