This January, Syrian startups entered 2015 with anticipation and hope to see their small businesses qualify to the second stage of Jusoor’s first Entrepreneurship Competition.
The Entrepreneurship program recently introduced the Jusoor Entrepreneurship Competition, launched in the beginning of this year following a series of online mentorship sessions hosting prominent Arab entrepreneurs including Rabea Ataya, Ronaldo Moushawar, and Ali Diab.
The competition will result in the selection of 3 winners during Jusoor’s Annual Global Conference in Los Angeles in February 2015. The top 3 prizes are financial rewards to fund the startups. In addition, the top 10 startup teams will win the opportunity to go through a 3 week bootcamp program with Oasis500 in Amman, Jordan.
Over a hundred applications were received from Syrian startups across the Middle East, North Africa, Europe and North America from young eager entrepreneurs passionate to bring their ideas to life. Over 60% of application came from Syria alone, followed by Turkey, Lebanon and the Gulf.
Categories of startups varied across of range of sectors, with the majority of startups being in technology, education and non-profit, followed by the healthcare and environmental sectors.
The top 20 finalists for Phase Two of the competition were announced Thursday January 7th. These 20 startups will now compete for the highest votes through an online polling platform rating their 1-2 minute video pitches.
Winning startups are selected based on the potential for growth and impact on job creation, economic and social development, and the development of skills and expertise in renewed industries.
Jusoor Entrepreneurship program was created to further develop Syrian youth and their potential, complementing the Academic and Career Development programs in educating young Syrians around the world.
