Jusoor’s English language training programs provide Syrians with the opportunity to develop their English skills in and increase their opportunities towards social integration and access to employment. By addressing the importance of language training, Jusoor aims to help Syrians overcome the obstacles that arise due to language barriers and provide the necessary communication skills in order for Syrian refugees to successfully adjust culturally and socially.
The Jusoor-AUB English Teaching and Learning Program creates a positive space for engagement by pairing AUB students with their Syrian refugee peers and has served more than 225 students to date. The community, created in partnership with AUB’s Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service, helps advance Syrian students’ English skills at no cost to the students. The Jusoor-AUB Language Exchange program also advances Syrian students’ English skills by matching students learning Arabic at AUB with native Arabic-speaking Syrian refugees, creating spaces for dialogue and a platform to mutually benefit and improve their language skills. The program exposes Syrians and foreign students to learn from one another’s experiences and benefit from the diversity of backgrounds and the exchange of ideas.
In December 2017 Jusoor launched a pilot in partnership with Voxy, an online English language learning platform, to benefit Syrian middle school students in Lebanon preparing for their national Brevet exam and adult Syrians in Beirut who are seeking to take the TOEFL/iELTS exam. Learners study at their own pace from home for three months, completing initial and final language assessments to determine their CEFR level, and have access to one-on-one private tutoring throughout their program. The program has a goal of enrolling 200 students in the pilot phase.
