During our second day of volunteering with Jusoor, we go straight into learning and exploring some classroom activities with Ziad Kanaan from Right to Play. This organisation focuses on gender inequality, building peaceful communities and life skills. Ziad stresses how significant it is for games to be used as exploratory activities and briefs us on the RCA process (reflect, connect, apply) before letting us all join in with some games of our own!
These games were extremely helpful and inspirational for us to use as building blocks to form our own ideas as well as giving us a collection of short, easily-prepared activities to supplement the longer teaching procedures.
Next, we have a talk from Rana Sawaya (CARE) about the importance of classroom management strategies. We are taught about the different approaches such as ‘whole class approach’ and the ‘individual approach’. What was best about exploring these ideas was that it gave me much deeper knowledge and understanding of identity, diversity, equality and community. Even though I have a bit of teaching experience, the skill of dealing with conflict is something I would like to develop. However what was great about Rana’s talk is that she gave us scenarios to help us in understanding the problem, how we react, what we would differently and the ideas of positive and negative reinforcement.
I’m very grateful for all the help and advice from today’s session. And I think the most important lesson is even though it may seem impossible to think how you can help marginalised communities and displaced people when we live so far away from tragedy, I believe we all move forward when we recognise how resilient and powerful the people around us are.
