Jusoor Summer Program 2016: A Wake-up Call

Iffat Al-Gharbi

This experience has been literally transforming. I had expectations, but they have been surpassed with everyday spent with these beautiful angels. With all that they’ve been through, their displacement and most importantly the horror that they have experienced at such a young age; would have led you to expect only hopelessness and utter sadness. Even though you can see it in their eyes, they are absolutely delightful. They gave me much more than I could ever hope to give them. My goal was to educate and support these kids, and make them happy for a short while; instead they gave me their love and kindness and showed me how magical they still are. They love each other unconditionally, and what Jusoor has done is incredibly powerful and important.

I’m so proud to have been a part of this program, I have been truly touched by the children and their involuntary scraped innocence. No one should have to endure what they have been through, it is so unfair that their circumstances have created so much ingrained mental and physical damage. I can’t say I have managed to do anything really, but being a part of their lives and helping them smile, even temporarily, was a great enough privilege and an unforgettable memory. I will be back, this program is immensely enriching to both the children and the volunteers who will most definitely return and share their stories. Thank you Jusoor team, without you this would not have been possible, and I hope that these efforts lead to a continuously prospering vision and expansion of Jusoor’s initiatives.
